Why the 2020 election had no campaign finance oversight

For the first time in years, the Federal Elections Commission is fully staffed.

“The agency has been without a quorum of four commissioners for most of 2020,” POLITICO reports, “leaving it unable to enforce campaign finance rules, hold hearings or issue guidance to campaigns.”

Yes, you read that correctly: The FEC has been unable to enforce campaign finance rules for all of 2020.

If you’re not disturbed by the fact that the FEC wasn't able to do its job during the most important election season of our lifetimes, you should be. Thankfully, the Commission’s slate is full and finally able to get to work, but there’s more bad news: Now the far-right is now claiming that the FEC helped rig the election in Biden’s favor.

But how was the FEC supposed to rig anything when they were too understaffed to take care of their normal business? Not to mention that the FEC isn’t even involved in vote counting and couldn’t have rigged the vote count if they wanted to. The GOP is just using the FEC as another scapegoat in their baseless tantrum over Biden winning the election. And we’re sick of it.

Thank you so much for joining the fight.

Together, we’ll protect the integrity of our democratic process, curb Republican misinformation, and get dark money out of politics.
