Tell the FAA: Hold Boeing accountable

After multiple deadly plane crashes, the grounding of its 737 Max in 2019 and 2020, and the high-profile incident earlier this year when a door-sized panel blew out of an Alaska Airlines flight while thousands of feet in the air -- Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun finally testified before Congress, for the first time, yesterday.

Calhoun was grilled by Senators from both parties who accused Boeing of scapegoating employees over management’s failures. The CEO admitted that Boeing had retaliated against whistleblowers, but still doubled down on his own record as CEO, saying, “I’m proud of this safety record.”

During the hearing, Chair Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee Investigations Subcommittee said that his staff had spoken with over two dozen whistleblowers who have indicated that Boeing had worked to cover up its use of non-compliant parts in commercial aircraft.

Blumenthal also criticized Boeing for inadequate leadership changes, calling these changes “management musical chairs”.

According to CNN’s Allison Morrow:

“For all the mistakes and safety problems Boeing has managed under CEO Dave Calhoun’s watch -- resulting in a dozen corporate whistleblowers, multiple groundings and a chunk of a plane’s fuselage literally blowing off in midair -- virtually no one has held him to account.”

In a separate hearing last week, Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Mike Whitaker said the FAA had been “too hands off” in its oversight of Boeing.

Since Boeing is unwilling to make the changes necessary to protect the public from serious safety threats, and has a track record of retaliating against, and not listening to, whistleblowers, it is beyond time for federal action.

Boeing has consistently put profits over safety, with the board approving a 45% pay increase for its CEO Dave Calhoun from $22.6 million in 2022 to $32.8 million in 2023.

Thanks to the Department of Defense, the federal government is Boeing’s biggest customer. So the American people deserve a lot of say in how the company is managed.

Nationalizing Boeing doesn’t have to mean that Boeing is run by the Secretary of Defense -- it just means that the federal government forcibly regulates and oversees what is already a state-backed monopoly, instead of letting Boeing’s executives endanger Americans for profit.

Thank you for taking action today to hold Boeing’s management accountable.

In solidarity,
