CC Newsletter 14 Oct - Violence Against Human Animals: Images from the Israel-Hamas War

With the body count rising in this latest, and particularly bloody Israel-Hamas War, the narrative of Israel the wounded, Israel the desperate, has now been annexed to Israel the just warrior State, fighting darkness and primaeval stone age barbarism. This has taken two forms.  The first is the way the victims of the Hamas attacks inside Israeli territory have been elevated, ennobled, sanctified.  The second is the manner with which the Hamas killings have been rendered exceptionally ghoulish, visceral, blood curdling. In contrast, the Palestinians die in sheer anonymity by the thousands, untroubling statistical notations.    The names of whole families who perish in the aftermath of machine inflicted slaughter are not known, not published, and not sought.  Reduced to mere numbers, the human element is leached out.

A Letter to Joe
Biden
by Dan Lieberman

I watched your speech outline a position on Hamas’ horrific attack on Israel…wait, wait, excuse me, a correction. I did not watch your speech. I observed, without equivocation, the President of the United States deliver a talk that was obviously written by someone from the Israeli Embassy.

The Struggle for Palestine is the Struggle of Working People Worldwide
by Shiraz Durrani

Imperialism and its media show the ‘problem’ of Palestine as confined to West Asia and as an isolated conflict.  Yet it is a global issue that needs fuller scrutiny and understanding of the trends that have been going on for centuries.  The destruction of Palestine and the massacres and exiling of its people is not an isolated event in the history of imperialism.  It is one of the latest in a long chain of
similar attacks on people and lands all around the world.  Not to see this trend of imperialist actions can mean mis-understanding the real nature of imperialism and its long history of capture of lands and massacres around the world.

Fukushima Up Close, 13 Years Later
by Robert Hunziker

The world is turning to nuclear power as a solution to global warming, but it is postulated herein that it is a huge mistake that endangers society. One nuclear meltdown causes as much damage over the long-term as a major war. Moreover, according to Dr. Paul Dorfman, chair of the Nuclear Consulting Group, former secretary to the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Internal Radiation: “It’s important to understand that nuclear is very likely to be a significant climate casualty.”

Dr. Ambedkar and Buddham Sharanam
by Umang Kumar

It is hardly surprising that his decision to adopt Buddhism formally had social and political dimensions as well. But it was a decision which arrived at after exhaustive engagement and soul searching. He reformulated some basic principles and the Wheel-turning – the Dhammacakka-Pravartana – of the new order, the Navayana Buddhism, was infused by his being – political, liberal, secular, spiritual.

Civic elections not being held in Mumbai, democracy suffers
by Vidyadhar Date

The Mumbai civic body in its 150th
year is being run by the government throwing all democratic norms to the wind, in defiance of the Constitutional amendment of decentralisation, we now witness more and more control from above, from Delhi, then a minister has now been allotted a special chamber in the civic building. He would be always welcome for a visit, but why set such precedents ? Mr Chahal is now an administrator of the publicly elected body, its term ended in March,2022, the ruling dispensation seems to have no plans to hold elections even after such time lapse.

Development Work with Priority for the Poorest
by Bharat Dogra

It is in this distressing situation that the ABSSS (Akhil Bhartiya Samaj Seva Sansthaan) made several well-planned and implemented effort to conserve and harvest rain water which brought hope to several villages of Manikpur block and some neighbouring areas. These small projects together present a very
hopeful pictures of what small-scale water harvesting projects when implemented honestly and skilfully can achieve even in very difficult conditions.
