Here in Arizona, we think the Grand Canyon is one of America’s most priceless treasures. Its natural, historic and cultural value simply can’t be calculated.
That’s why it’s so shocking that uranium companies are still trying to dig new mines here.
The Grand Canyon’s breathtaking landscape was carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. Now that river, along with the springs, waterfalls and creeks that make this landscape a vibrant home for people and wildlife -- are all in jeopardy.
Your senators could protect the Grand Canyon once and for all. Send a message now telling them to support the Grand Canyon Protection Act and stop the reckless push for mines at the Grand Canyon!
Uranium mining is one of the most dangerous, dirty and destructive industries in the world. But let’s be clear -- any mine in the Grand Canyon watershed poses an enormous threat to the park, its wildlife and the Havasupai people who have called this place home since time immemorial.
In just the last few years, existing mines in the Grand Canyon watershed have pierced the shallow aquifers, allowing mine waste to mix with drinking water. In fact, dissolved uranium in that water has consistently exceeded federal toxicity limits by more than 300% and arsenic levels by more than 2,800%.
Mining in the Grand Canyon watershed is literally poisoning the park and its surrounding communities already. And companies want to do more.
Your senators need to hear that you want them to do everything in their power to permanently protect the Grand Canyon. With nonstop pressure from uranium companies, there’s no time to lose. Send your message right away!
I know you agree that the Grand Canyon is too precious to poison. Thank you for speaking out.
Thank you for all that you do for our parks,
Michè Lozano
Arizona Program Manager
