Facebook could keep the Senate red

 

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently took questions from Congress on who’s responsible for the content that gets shared on their platforms.   Both CEOs said they should continue to be shielded by a law called Section 230 which, according to POLITICO, “protects them and other online companies from lawsuits over the user content they host or remove.”   President-elect Biden has said he would revoke this protection for Big Tech, which would then make companies like Twitter and Facebook accountable for hosting false information, like the kind that propelled Trump to victory in 2016.   But even though studies have shown conservatives share the most “fake news” online, many GOP Senators are convinced Big Tech is actually too friendly to progressives. With crucial runoffs in Georgia approaching -- vital elections that will decide which party controls Congress -- we’re reaching out to our Democratic supporters to see if they think Big Tech companies should have a shorter leash.

The Georgia runoffs are getting closer by the day, and right-wing special interests are pumping money into Facebook ads in a last-ditch effort to keep the Senate red and take away Joe Biden’s ability to govern as president.

In addition to paid conservative ads, far-right social media users are dominating organic traffic – drowning out trustworthy and progressive sources with lies, smears, and conspiracy theories.

You may see these types of posts and laugh or shake your head. But not everyone does – some people believe them. Some people share them. Many Americans may change their votes because of them.

With the stakes of the battle for Congress so high, we MUST fight back. We must increase our support for progressive causes and candidates. But our coffers are depleted, and many grassroots supporters have stopped paying attention after November 3 and thus stopped their giving.

Please, friend, you remember how tough it was for Obama to get anything done with a Republican Senate. We can’t let that happen again under Joe Biden. We need to finish strong and fight to the last. We’re doing everything we can – but our work to push back against the internet trolls fighting to keep the Senate red would be massively amplified with your help.
