It’s time to ban fracking.

Yesterday, we wrote to you about the Trump administration's plans to bail out the fossil fuel industry amid falling oil prices. Not only do we have to resist bailouts for oil billionaires, we must fight for solutions like the Ban Fracking Act that will protect fenceline communities.

For far too long, the oil and gas industry has widely repeated the lie that fracking is a “safe” practice, one which poses little threat to communities. Yet we know this to be false as reports routinely prove the opposite. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which involves injecting water deep into the ground to push up oil and gas, has harmed far too many communities in the country by putting their health at risk, effectively exploiting the working class and communities of color.

Recently, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Representative Darren Soto introduced the first-ever bill to ban the harmful practice of fracking nationwide in the House of Representatives. The Ban Fracking Act would put an end to the dangerous practice and aims to initiate a just transition for workers in the fracking industry.

For the sake of our communities, our land, our water, and air, we must end fracking once and for all.

Fracking is destroying frontline communities. Now, for the first time, there is a clear path forward against fracking at the national level. In conjunction with Senator Bernie Sanders' recent Senate bill to ban fracking, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Darren Soto’s Ban Fracking Act lays out a plan to ban all new federal permits for fracking infrastructure and to create a 2500 foot buffer zone between fracking sites and homes by 2021. Most notably, the Ban Fracking Act lays out a framework for federal agencies to work closely with organized labor to prioritize the placement of fossil fuel workers into good-paying jobs in their communities.
Our federal lawmakers must fulfill their oath to their constituents by making certain that the oil and gas industry can’t exploit our most vulnerable communities any longer.
