The Banana Republican Party

 

You may have noticed that some people can’t pronounce the name of our party correctly in its adjectival form. They say “the Democrat Party” and “that Democrat Congresswoman” and “that Democrat bill.”

Grating and irritating, no?

When I remind them that this continuing mispronunciation is an affront—like us trying to say the name of their party and coming out with “Banana Republican Party” and “Banana Republican Congressman” — they still refuse to change their ways.

So now I tell them: do what FDR did—call us “the Democracy.”

That’s what FDR called us — “the Democracy.” The plutocrats and economic royalists say invest in the rich and some of the wealth will drip down on everyone else, FDR would insist, but “the Democracy” says invest in the great American middle class and we’ll all rise and prosper together.

That’s the doctrine.

And surely it’s time to dust that off.

Frank, these days the Democratic Party is “the Democracy.” We are the only major party in America standing up for the right to vote and free and fair elections, for respecting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, for strong democracy, and for every woman and man’s personal freedom.
