Today’s Action: Cancel student debt!
The Biden administration is closer to canceling student debt than ever, according to recent reports. White House press secretary Jen Psaki indicated that President Biden "would make a decision about any cancellation of student debt before the conclusion" of the most recent pause, which is set to expire on August 31. With just months to go, progressives must push every elected official to support broad student loan cancellation now. The massive $1.7 trillion education debt is crushing American prosperity. Gainfully employed borrowers were struggling to keep up with student loan payments even before the pandemic; in these uncertain economic times the situation has only worsened.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson tweeted, "If you can afford to pause student loan payments over and over again, you can afford to cancel it." After two years of renewed pauses on student loan payments, he couldn’t be more right. Corporations and businesses across the country have had enormous loans forgiven throughout the pandemic; it’s past time for student loan borrowers to get the same treatment.
Millions of young people are unable to save money, buy a home, or open a business thanks to "good" debts that only seem to increase with every interest payment. For Americans still struggling to rebound from the worst economic catastrophe in their lifetimes, pauses just won’t cut it. We need every elected official fighting for federal loan cancellation for every single borrower.
"Working your way through college" hasn’t been a feasible solution to counter higher education prices in decades. In the past ten years alone, the average cost of attendance has risen at least 25%, while the federal minimum wage hasn’t budged a cent. We have an entire generation of Americans crushed under the weight of skyrocketing education costs, now struggling even more due to the ongoing pandemic. Canceling student loan debt must be a legislative priority now!
