BREAKING: S.F. boba shop was a front for an international car-burglary operation
Yesterday, my office announced a major arrest in a multi-year long investigation into an international fencing operation moving millions of dollars worth of electronics stolen from cars parked in San Francisco around the world. Our surveillance revealed that a boba tea shop in the Tenderloin is actually a front for an international fencing operation, where street-level burglars sell stolen goods which are then shipped to countries like Vietnam and China.
Our investigation , which we called “Operation Auto Pilot” used undercover surveillance to recover more than 1,000 stolen laptops, phones, cameras, and other devices as well as more than $10,000 in cash.
Car break-ins have been a longstanding problem in San Francisco for at least a decade; I created Operation Auto Pilot to take aggressive action against fencing networks responsible for so much property crime.
This bust will send a strong message of deterrence to anyone considering breaking into a car or buying stolen goods: We are watching and you will be held accountable.
When I ran for office, I promised to crack down on these kinds of illegal operations. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.
The recall effort wants to brand me and my office as “soft on crime.” That couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m just fed up with ineffective policies like mass incarceration, cash bail, and allowing police to act with impunity, that only contribute to the cycle of crime.
If the recall is successful, they’ll do nothing to address car burglaries. But I have and will continue to do so.
Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.
Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
