Tax filing season starts on January 27 and eligible people in your
state will soon be able to file taxes online for free directly with the
IRS! Check to see if you’re eligible for the IRS Direct File program >> Here’s a little more information from the IRS about the Direct File program: The Direct File service will be available in English and Spanish, and works on mobile devices as easily as it does tablets, laptops, and desktop computers It includes dedicated customer support directly from the IRS This year, it’s open to people in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming
Direct File will support most simple returns, and key credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. It won’t include self-employment income, business expenses, itemized deductions, and some other more complex tax situations And it includes a screener tool that will help you quickly confirm whether your tax situation is supported, so you can plan to use the tool as soon as filing season starts later this month. The tool will connect you to alternative filing options if you’re not eligible to use Direct File this year
Last filing season, 15,000 eligible Americans used IRS Direct File. Surveys showed that users found it an easy and helpful service, and Direct File participants saved a total of $5.6 million in tax preparation fees. The IRS Direct File tool is an exciting and important step in the right direction, and a new option for people who want to bypass expensive tax preparation companies. If Direct File sounds interesting to you, learn more about the program, check your eligibility, and soon you could start filing your taxes with the IRS >>
