“The reality is it is an invasion of our southern border,” he said.
The lawmaker argued that – if a ban of assault weapons comes into force – people who live within 10 miles of the US’s southern border with Mexico must be exempt because they need “to protect themselves” from people who he claims “pose a danger or threat”.

Today’s Action: Get out the abortion vote!
Your involvement in your local politics this year could mean the difference between American women having access to legal, safe abortion or the criminalization of life-saving healthcare.
At least 21 states are preparing for crucial elections for state Supreme Court justices, governors, and state legislatures that could turn the tide in the fight for abortion rights. The overturning of Roe v. Wade placed the lives of birth-givers throughout the country at risk while those in red states are subjected to extremist trigger laws with the goal of forcing unwanted and dangerous pregnancies. We have to ensure that no more anti-choice conservatives are elected to office— lives quite literally depend on it.
There are several different facets of abortion at risk, including whether or not county sheriffs will enforce bans and investigate pregnancies, whether or not county prosecutors will pursue abortion cases, anti-abortion gerrymandering, and even voting on state constitutional protections altogether.
If you haven’t yet, it’s time to plug into your local politics and find out who is going to stand up for abortion rights for your community. You can check out this guide for just a few of the upcoming elections, but unfortunately, the list doesn’t end there. It’s up to you to find the best candidates that will protect reproductive care in your community for years to come!
Every. Vote. Matters. Check your voter registration status and polling place to ensure you’re prepared for upcoming elections — and tell your network of like-minded friends and family to do the same on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, at the park, in the bleachers, at the dinner table, and anywhere else you can!
What at first felt like a terrifying possibility is now a grim reality for half the country, but we don’t have to wait for our legislators to take the lead. It has never been more crucial to join the fight. Whether it’s donating to a local abortion fund, finding a rally, or writing your members of Congress, your voice is needed in the struggle for federally protected abortion rights. You can find a comprehensive list of abortion funds to donate to here.
You can still currently receive abortion aid via mail in most states, and financial aid is available if you cannot afford your care. While acquiring and using abortion pills may come with legal risk, widespread access to such resources is crucial. While abortion is being attacked by conservatives, we are lucky to have abortion funds and activists who have been building resources in preparation for this possibility.
PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition to charge Trump and his family for corrupt profiteering off the presidency, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
