Daily Dose of Democracy:
Tucker Carlson on Trump: "I hate him passionately"
While Fox's most popular white nationalist was working to brainwash his viewers into worshipping the disgraced ex-president, newly released texts reveal he loathed Trump. So we've got that in common. But Tucker's job is to appease his right wing viewers with MAGA propaanda, so to quote Trump himself — Tucker will hypocritically "keep drinking that garbage" for as long as he has to. Time will tell if MAGA nation will continue to drink from the same dumpster or if Tucker's unmasking will open their eyes. We're not getting our hopes up.
VIDEO OF THE DAY: Republican humiliated by another Republican over horrific bill
The GOP is embracing increasingly deranged policies when it comes to their targeting of the LGBTQ community and are quickly finding themselves unable to defend — or fully explain — their own legislation, even to members of their OWN party.

Big Oil wants to pillage the Alaskan wilderness for big profits
350.org: The "Willow Project" oil drilling project would be a disaster for the environment and for the Native Americans who live near it — creating as much pollution as another 2 MILLION cars on the street. 350.org is leading the fight to convince President Biden to stop the project in its tracks and stop greedy corporations from accelerating the climate crisis. Can you chip in to help them make your voice heard?
GOP tears itself apart over Tucker Carlson's shameless attempt to whitewash January 6th
Tucker Carlson took the unreleased January 6th footage given to him by Kevin McCarthy and cherry-picked bits and pieces to make it seem like January 6th was not a violent insurrection, despite all the hours of footage that CLEARLY SHOWS a violent insurrection. The House GOP is none too pleased with him and McCarthy, because they now to have answer uncomfortable questions about it — not because they don't agree with him. Even Mitch McConnell complained about Tucker's hatchet job, calling it a "mistake" before continuing to not do anything about those responsible or supporting the efforts to hold Trump and his cronies responsible.

Elon Musk backpedals after mocking disabled Twitter worker in tweet storm
America's worst loudmouth billionaire publicly belittled and trolled a Twitter employee for simply having the gall to ask if he had been fired. Musk even implied that the firing had to do with the man's muscular dystrophy, mocked him for "tweeting too much" and called him "the worst" — only to later apologize, presumably after his lawyers told him that he had left himself wide open to a discrimination lawsuit. Nice going, bozo!

Rupert Murdoch privately suggested Fox News hosts "went too far" with election fraud claims
The billionaire arch-villain apparently had no problem admitting the truth about Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham pushing lies about the 2020 election in private even as his company continued to spew slanderous filth on a nightly basis. Thankfully, the $1.6 billion lawsuit brought by Dominion against the toxic right-wing network means that one of the most destructive forces in American history might finally be held accountable for its actions.

Gavin Newsom to shut Walgreens out of California state business following abortion pill decision
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that his state of California will cease business with Walgreens after the retail drugstore decided to cave to "extremists" by refusing to dispense abortion medication in 21 states controlled by Republicans. While the gesture is greatly appreciated, it is unclear how Newsom will seek to cut ties with Walgreens.

"Sleaze-slinging" Fox News denounced by family of Jan. 6th officer who died
The family of Brian Sicknick, the US Capitol police officer who died the day after the Jan. 6th attack on Congress, condemned Tucker Carlson and Fox News as “unscrupulous and outright sleazy”, after the primetime host exploited security footage from the riot bestowed by Kevin McCarthy to push a pro-insurrectionist narrative.
Federal judge says controversial Missouri gun law violates US Constitution
Missouri cannot enforce a controversial state law that it absurdly claims will protect gun rights, a federal judge has ruled, correctly pointing out that the measure runs afoul of the US Constitution. The Justice Department argued in a lawsuit it brought against Missouri last year that the “Second Amendment Preservation Act,” which blocks state and local law officials from enforcing federal gun laws, “impairs law enforcement efforts in Missouri” and interferes with the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, which states that federal laws take precedence over state laws. For once, sanity has won out — until the appeal hits and it gets kicked up to the Supreme Court, where Samuel Alito will decide that actually, the Founding Fathers believed owning assault rifles was the nation's foundational pillar.
Legal observer hit with terrorism charges after mass ‘Cop City’ arrests
Among those arrested by the Atlanta police for "terrorism" happen to be a lawyer from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Thomas Jurgens, who was there observing the protests in an easily identifiable neon green hat. It's no coincidence that he was swept up in the crackdown, as police sought to punish both protesters and those sent to watch the police for any brutality or violation of rights. “The employee is an experienced legal observer, and their arrest is not evidence of any crime, but of heavy-handed law enforcement intervention against protesters," said the SPLC in a statement.
Biden upends politics, precedent in pivot on DC crime law
President Biden’s support of a Republican resolution to block new DC crime laws is splitting members of his own party amid rising concerns about crime in the nation’s capital and other cities. Most House Democrats voted against it last month, arguing as they have for many years that the DC should be able to govern itself. The Democratic support for the resolution, which comes as murders have spiked over a number of years in DC, is a shift for Biden and his party and could allow Congress to nullify the city’s laws through the disapproval process for the first time in more than three decades. The wisdom or lack thereof of this move remains to be seen but as is always the case with crime laws, it's worth approaching harsher sentencings with a hefty dose of skepticism given that we live in such an over-policed, over-incarcerated nation.

Today’s Action: Tell Congress to do MORE to reduce gun violence!
We have surpassed 100 mass shootings in 64 days this calendar year. It’s long past time that we finally begin the job of curbing the epidemic of unspeakable — and very preventable — gun violence and pass the real, meaningful gun safety reform that is supported by a clear majority of Americans.
In the first month of 2023, there were nearly 40 mass shootings throughout the country. Yes, you read that right. That’s more than any other January since the Gun Violence Archives began keeping such records in 2014. Since then, countless more. It’s unacceptable that after so much loss, our elected officials still haven’t managed to advance any meaningful anti-gun violence legislation through Congress. In the United States it is still legal to own an AR-15, the very killing machine that has been used time and time again to murder and maim innocent Americans en masse. AR-15s were used in the mass murders at Sandy Hook, Parkland, Aurora, Sutherland Springs, Las Vegas, San Bernardino, the Poway synagogue, the Tree of Life synagogue, the Buffalo supermarket, Uvalde…the list goes on and on — and will continue to be used to massacre innocent civilians unless we finally do something about it.
Call (202.224.3121) or email your representatives and demand Congress immediately take action to ban AR-15s and other assault rifles!
Once the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 expired in 2004, the number of deaths in mass shootings skyrocketed. Assault rifles are specifically designed to kill on the battlefield; there is no reason they should ever be in civilian hands.
There were 735 mass shootings in the United States last year, up from 693 in 2021. Excluding suicide, there were 20,726 gun deaths in 2021, as well. According to the Washington Post, a child is shot every hour in America. We simply cannot stand idly by and let 2023 continue this horrific trend. The cause of this problem is clear — it’s the guns!
Call (202.224.3121) or email your representatives to demand Congress ban assault weapons immediately!
