Today’s Action: Pass H.R. 5, the Equality Act!

America continues to legally discriminate against gay, lesbian, and transgender people. This year alone, there have been at least 17 laws passed at the state-level targeting the LGBTQ+ community. The fact is, conservatives have been scapegoating and persecuting the oppressed for centuries — and doing so under the guise of religious freedom.

The ability to persecute others is not something that makes America "free." What is important is the ability for all, regardless of identity, to live an equitable life. We have a long way to go before we paint that picture. Yes, June has been a busy month for Congress, but we must not allow protections for the LGBTQ+ community to fall by the wayside.

Call or email your Senators and tell them to join 72% of Americans in supporting H.R. 5, the Equality Act! If they’ve already co-sponsored, thank them – and urge them to stop at nothing to pass it!

The Democratic-led House passed the Equality Act in 2019, but it collected dust in the GOP-controlled Senate. With Democrats now in power, we must move with urgency – because every day that we delay, our LGBTQ+ communities continue to face hostile living and work environments.

For far too long, our country has denied basic protections to LGBTQ+ people. The Equality Act includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics under civil rights law – finally legally protecting LGBTQ+ people nationwide from discrimination. It is well past time to pass this kind of legislation.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand they keep H.R. 5, the Equality Act, prioritized! If they’ve already co-sponsored, thank them – and tell them to keep pushing!

PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition urging all Americans to get vaccinated, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
