IMPORTANT ISSUES! THESE ARE NOT SOLICITATIONS!
ALL REASONABLE PEOPLE SHOULD QUESTION THE ICE GESTAPO POLICIES
THAT DISREGARD THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF CHILDREN!
IT SHOULD NOT REQUIRE THE INTERCESSION OF ELECTED OFFICIALS OR A
JUDGE TO SAFEGUARD THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN!
AS WE NOW KNOW, THE VAST MAJORITY OF THOSE BEING DETAINED BY
ICE GESTAPO ARE NOT CRIMINALS AS TRUMP INITIALLY CLAIMED....
WE NEED A WRITTEN POLICY THAT DETAILS THESE ISSUES....
Friend, Last night, I learned that a 14-year-old girl in Marlborough – a child with no criminal history – had been detained by federal immigration agents from the Department of Homeland Security. As a mother of a 15- and 11-year-old, I was furious. And I got to work. I got in touch with the young girl’s attorney to see how we could help, and I immediately demanded her release. What became clear was that this wasn’t an immigration action – it was an attempt to target a child so that federal agents could smoke out her father who they wanted to arrest. This isn’t the first time we've seen this playbook. Two months ago, ICE detained five-year-old Liam Ramos in Minnesota – a little boy in a blue bunny hat with a Spiderman backpack – under similar circumstances. A federal judge ordered his release and called the ordeal “cruel” and “bereft of human decency.” The country was horrified. Now, it was happening again. Here in Massachusetts. In our district.
By coordinating with our state and local partners, we demanded answers and pushed for her release through every available channel. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Marlborough Mayor Christian Dumais, and State Representative Danielle Gregoire – all of whom were instrumental in this process and committed to protecting our community. Thanks to those efforts and the tireless work of the girl’s attorney, a federal judge issued an order this afternoon that she be returned to Massachusetts and reunited with her family. This is the right outcome. It could not have come soon enough. But I want to be direct with you: this should never have happened in the first place. The fact that it took a federal court order to return a child to her family is a damning indictment of DHS policy. And it raises serious questions that demand answers:
- What directives are being issued to federal agents authorizing the detention of minors?
- Who approved this?
- What is DHS doing to ensure it never happens again?
We were fortunate this case moved quickly. The next family may not be so lucky. That’s why I won’t stop pushing for the accountability and oversight this community – and every family in America – deserves. This cannot become the new normal. Sincerely, |
