The Trump administration is terrorizing immigrant communities―separating families, deporting people without due process, and denying citizenship to people who have already been vetted and approved. Meanwhile, they’re attacking and excluding Black and brown immigrants while using the immigration system to fast track “Gold Card” admissions for the wealthy.1 At the Coalition on Human Needs, we’re shining a spotlight on these gross abuses of power and Trump’s executive overreach, including his black site detention camps where detainees are denied basic medical care,2 access to an attorney, and their due process rights. We’re speaking out with and for our immigrant neighbors and demanding justice and accountability. We know that when Americans learn about injustices against immigrants, including those here legally, they don’t like it. Recently, at a naturalization ceremony in Boston, agents from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) pulled immigrants out of line as they waited to take the oath of allegiance and officially become citizens. Why weren’t they allowed to proceed? Due to their country of origin.1 Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years. Background checks, extensive interviews, taking classes, and passing a citizenship test, not to mention obtaining a green card. The last step in the years-long process is taking your oath of allegiance to the United States, and dozens of people were prevented from taking that final step. This halting of citizenship ceremonies isn’t just happening in Boston; it’s happening across the country as the Trump administration has implemented full or partial immigration bans to 19 countries.2 This is undeniably xenophobic and un-American, but that’s been the hallmark of Trump’s mass deportation machine. And we’re fighting back against it. While this administration is ramping up attacks on our neighbors and others in immigrant communities, our coalition is a unifying force, bringing together community groups, organizers, service providers, faith leaders, and advocates into one coordinated front. None of this work would be possible without your support. Now, in a shocking report from ProPublica, we’ve learned that as part of Trump’s mass deportation campaign, 600 children have been sent to ICE detention facilities―more than the previous four years combined.3 Most of the children are there for an average of four months. Many of the children were picked up with their parents at routine immigration appointments or at a home or business when ICE raided it. Many have lived in the U.S. for years. This harkens back to the child separation policies of the first Trump administration. The government is escalating its attacks. The fear is spreading. Families are under siege. And our ability to respond, to keep families together, to restore citizenship ceremonies, to push back against illegal detentions, to defend our immigrant neighbors, depends on us coming together and fighting back against these attacks.
