Friends, there have been a few news stories recently that have made me wonder (even more than usual) — WTF is going on with the Republican Party right now? |
I mean… this is wildly vile and alarming stuff. It goes without saying (or at least it used to) that this rhetoric is incredibly dangerous. But that’s not what we’re hearing from the GOP. JD Vance even took to social media to defend the despicable comments in the leaked chat as “stupid jokes” from “kids” — basically saying boys will be boys. Reality check: some of the people in that chat were my age! One was literally a state senator in Vermont — and at least he had enough shame to resign. THIS IS NOT OK. We have some big work to do as a country. We need to be reflecting on what our core values really are, how we teach them to our kids, and how we reach a generation of young adults that’s struggling through unprecedented times. And of course, we need to think about what’s led to the crises we find ourselves in right now, so as a country, we don’t make the same mistakes again. But while we do that, we’re also in the middle of a frontline fight against an actively authoritarian government that’s militarizing our cities and trampling on our rights. And in that fight, we desperately need more people on our side — we need to elect more Democrats. Taking back the House next year is one critical glimmering light at the end of this dangerous tunnel, so we need to do every single thing we can to make that happen. A first-term Republican state senator from Orleans County is facing pressure from members of his own party to resign after a story published by Politico Tuesday detailed his involvement in a racist text chat between members of Young Republican chapters in four states, including Vermont.
Samuel Douglass, 27, was part of a historic red wave last November that saw the GOP pick up six seats in the Vermont Senate and reconfigure the balance of power in the Legislature.
Last week, Douglass was one of six Republican lawmakers nominated for “Legislator of the Year” at the Vermont GOP’s Awards Night in South Burlington.
On Tuesday evening, Republican Gov. Phil Scott called on Douglass to resign after a leaked group chat showed Douglass and his wife using racist and antisemitic language with fellow young Republicans from across the country.
“The hateful statements made in this group chat are disgusting and unacceptable,” Scott said in a written statement Tuesday. “The vile, racist, bigoted, and antisemitic dialogue that has been reported is deeply disturbing. There is simply no excuse for it. Those involved should resign from their roles immediately and leave the Republican party — including Vermont State Senator Sam Douglass.”

New York Assemblyman Michael Reilly fired his chief of staff over his participation in a group chat with young Republicans where Hitler references and racist jokes were made.
Peter Giunta, who served in Reilly’s office for more than five years, was linked to offensive texts in a Telegram chat that was first reported by Politico.
