And here are a few highlights from this week's The Dallas Morning News coverage of Senator Johnson's campaign launch. In what he called an effort to restore integrity to the office, state Sen. Nathan Johnson on Tuesday launched a campaign to replace Ken Paxton as Texas attorney general. “It is significant that Ken Paxton has abused the office, that he’s corrupted the office, that he’s debased the office,” Johnson said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “And not only am I sick of that, I think the people of Texas are too.” ... “How does a Democrat win?” Johnson added. “ Who else can clean up the mess that’s left behind in that office? The public is going to respond to that.” ... A Dallas lawyer, Johnson said he’s been an effective lawmaker since joining the Senate. In 2018 he unseated Republican Don Huffines to win the seat. He campaigned on being an independent voice. Texas Democrats made gains in the 2018 cycle. Not only did Johnson win his Senate seat, but the party flipped 12 House districts and two congressional seats. ... The OAG operates at the center of it all. I’m running to be Texas’s next Attorney General because our state needs an attorney general who can meet the moment – with strength, independence, and a genuine commitment to serve the people of Texas instead of partisan ideology.  Seven years ago, I ran for the Texas Senate and defeated a wealthy, right-wing, highly-favored Republican incumbent — by 8 points. It marked the first Democratic victory in the district in more than 30 years.   In the Texas Senate, I've delivered on my promise of accountability and good governance by following this guiding principle: go where you see the need for change.  Seeing Texas’s worst-in-the-nation uninsured rate, I became the state’s leading voice on Medicaid expansion. When the Legislature wouldn’t act, I reformed the Texas health insurance marketplace so hundreds of thousands of Texans could buy private health insurance. After winter storm Uri, I played a central role in fortifying the Texas power grid, restructuring energy markets, and preserving our vital sources of renewable energy. When the Legislature revisited tax incentives, I made it harder for businesses to scam taxpayers, and promoted opportunity in overlooked communities. And much more…   I’ve been able to get important things done. Sometimes by collaborating, sometimes fighting, sometimes both.   Through all of it, I stuck to my values. I've never been driven by donors or party shot-callers or political ambition or expediency.
