Everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home

 

America has an affordable housing crisis, and if we don't take action, it's going to get even worse under the Trump administration. Housing prices are expected to increase by at least 4% in 2025, and Trump's reckless, on-again, off-again tariffs mean construction costs will jump. Private equity is fueling America's housing crisis. Across the country, including right here in Oregon, hedge funds are wielding their financial muscle to gobble up available housing, outbid hard-working Americans who have sacrificed to save up down payments, drive up prices and rents, and turn neighborhoods into Wall Street profit centers at the expense of folks struggling to find a place to call home. We need to put keys into the hands of first-time homeowners, not Wall Street profiteers and corporate interests. Here's what I'm doing to end these practices: I introduced the HOPE (Humans Over Private Equity) for Homeownership Act to kick hedge funds out of the housing market and increase access to affordable housing. I'll never stop pushing to find ways to build more housing across the country to ensure there's a strong supply of affordable, accessible housing for all. Before I ever held public office, I led the Portland chapter of Habitat for Humanity, working side by side with families fighting to keep a roof over their heads. It was seeing everyday Americans struggle to find affordable housing that motivated me to run for the Oregon legislature. In my role with Habitat, I was in a meeting with a local elected official, talking about the housing problem in Portland, and I realized it was time for me to be on the other side of the table to make a difference on housing. Now, I'm in the Senate fighting for affordable housing for all. Everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home, and we're working to get it done. Onward!
