Celebrating Mothers Joyce Vance May 11 To all the moms and all the people who love moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day. Looking for something you can do to honor your mother? Here’s what’s on my list: Protect democracy. Tell Stephen Miller his suggestion of suspending habeas corpus because of an “invasion,” when border crossings, even if they could be considered an invasion (multiple judges have said no), are at an all-time low, is ridiculous. Honor government workers, those who’ve lost their jobs and those who continue to try and do the right thing. Support our national parks, journalism, lawyers, researchers, public health officials and others who are trying to keep us safe. Read this piece from David Rothkopf, which is cheeky but also serious and sobering. Every Mother’s Day, I miss my Mom, and I’m reminded of my Grandmother, the daughter of immigrants who fled hate-fueled violence, who instilled strong democratic values in us and taught us, without ever saying a word, that women could be and do whatever they wanted to. History is full of moms, like mine, who taught in a pre-k program for kids who probably wouldn’t have made it educationally without that early support, who made the world a better place.
