![]() I want to talk to you about Trump’s attack on the right to vote. This is important to me — and what’s happening right now matters more than ever. But before I continue, can you chip in today to help us protect access to the ballot and push back against efforts to restrict the right to vote? This week, Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at restricting access to mail-in voting. For some, that might sound like just another political headline, but for families like mine and millions of others, it’s something we’ve seen before. My grandfather was forced to take literacy tests just to cast a ballot — tests that were intentionally designed to keep Black Americans from voting. My father and grandfather had to pay a poll tax, and my great-grandmother was denied the right to vote altogether. These weren’t isolated stories. They were part of a system built to silence millions of Americans. It took generations of struggle and the passage of the Voting Rights Act to begin to right that path. That’s why I don’t take moments like this lightly. Whether it’s poll taxes then or limiting mail-in ballots now, the goal has always been the same: making it harder for people to make their voices heard in government. And we know who that impacts the most — seniors, voters with disabilities, working families, and people in rural communities who might not otherwise be able to access the polls and participate in our democracy. But instead of building on the progress of the Voting Rights Act and working to expand access, Trump and national Republicans are trying to roll it back so they can cheat their way into winning elections. We can’t let that happen. Protecting the right to vote has always required vigilance — and it’s always required people willing to stand up and fight for it. That’s what our campaign is about. I took my oath of office with my hand on my father’s Bible, which he kept his poll tax receipt in. So as long as I’m in Congress, I’ll fight back against these attacks on our precious right to vote. But I need your help to do it. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Thank you for being part of this fight. — Jenn McClellan
