Thank you for contacting me regarding the Trump administration’s use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
ICE is the federal law enforcement agency within the Department of Homeland Security responsible for preserving national security and public safety through the enforcement of immigration laws. Under President Trump, however, ICE is not operating within its mandates.
While previous administrations’ immigration enforcement priorities focused on the arrest and removal of undocumented immigrants who posed threats to public safety and national security, President Trump has expanded the scope of enforcement to target all undocumented immigrants, regardless of threat or criminal history. The president’s zealous and inappropriate use of ICE has left two American citizens dead after ICE agents were given a clear directive from President Trump to target people on the streets, in their homes, at work, and other public places.
Now, President Trump has directed ICE agents to monitor our airports under the guise of assisting with security lines. These new ICE agents are not trained and ill-equipped to handle the job tasked to them within the confines of “immigration enforcement.” They are certainly not trained to assist with specialized aviation security or technical knowledge necessary to operate screening equipment and identify nuanced suspicious activity.
When Secretary Noem was still in charge, I cosponsored H.Res. 996, which provided articles of impeachment against Secretary Noem, and voted against Republican efforts to table the resolution providing for articles of impeachment against President Trump. Impeaching a senior member of our government is not something I take lightly or believe should be used as a knee-jerk reaction to policy disagreements. However, Secretary Noem continually violated the rights of Americans, the U.S. Constitution, and the very democratic ideals that our country was founded on. Sadly, I don’t expect much difference from her replacement – now-Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Simply put, he is unfit for this job with zero experience or knowledge of homeland security. The Senate should have learned from Noem and not confirmed him. Not surprisingly, with Republicans controlling that chamber, they pushed him through to be a rubber stamp for President Trump.
Prior to this administration, ICE agents, like so many other federal law enforcement officers, were highly trained, devoted civil servants. But President Trump is using ICE as his personal police force, exploiting the fear they invoke in our communities and degrading all the dedicated agents who came before this new shift. He cannot be allowed to use ICE to carry out his authoritarian attempts at government. This is why I voted against the recent Homeland Security funding bill and remain opposed to any additional funding or efforts that allow ICE to continue carrying out these unlawful activities.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future regarding this or any other matter of concern. Additionally, you may find my website (www.keating.house.gov ) to be a useful resource for keeping up with my work in Washington and the Ninth District of Massachusetts.
Sincerely,
William R. Keating
