Even though Wisconsin has been one of the premier swing states in the nation for over two decades now, Team Blue is on the verge of securing a stranglehold over the Wisconsin Supreme Court that will last into the next decade. On Tuesday, April 7, only six days from today--liberal candidate Chris Taylor is up against conservative Maria Lazar in the 2026 Wisconsin Supreme Court election. If Taylor prevails, she would increase the liberal majority on the court from the current 4-3 margin to a much safer 5-2 advantage, thus securing a liberal majority on the highest court in a crucial swing state that will last through at least 2030. However, that might actually be understating the degree to which not only a win, but a big win for Taylor could lock up Wisconsin's highest court for Team Blue (I write "Team Blue" instead of "Democrats," because the Wisconsin Supreme Court is technically nonpartisan). In the 2026 election, national conservatives have not really done much to help Lazar. The reason for this is because, after Elon Musk spent tens of millions on the 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court election last year and lost by 10 points anyway, most of them just see Wisconsin as a hopeless cause right now. In fact, the only reason Lazar is even running is because conservative incumbent Rebecca Bradley retired instead of facing the voters in the midst of a strongly pro-Democratic electoral environment. With another conservative-held seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court up for election next year, a big win by Taylor in 2026 could cause the same pattern to unfold, thus allowing Democrats to practically waltz to a 6-1 majority that would last through at least 2033. The Wisconsin Supreme Court will rule on any challenges to the 2028 or 2032 presidential elections in this perennially crucial swing state. It will also rule on the ongoing legal case against the 6-2 Republican gerrymander of the Wisconsin's congressional districts, a case that will be heard next year. Thus, this election is a key battle in the fight against Republican attempts to preordain the outcomes of our elections nationwide. Stop the Extinction Committee From Dooming Wildlife The Trump administration just convened the Endangered Species Committee — aka Extinction Committee — for the first time in more than 30 years.  Its mission? To grant all Gulf of Mexico oil and gas activities a sweeping exemption under the Endangered Species Act — that is, a free pass to dodge the law. By fast-tracking oil drilling in the Gulf, this move would doom some of the United States’ most iconic and imperiled species. They include Rice’s whales, down to a population of only 51; Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, who nest on the Gulf’s beaches; and manatees, many of whom are still struggling to recover from a recent mass starvation event.  Given the committee’s extraordinary power to decide the fate of an endangered species, Congress intended it to only be used as a last resort. The Trump administration is weaponizing this power to pad the oil and gas industry’s profits.  If you live in the United States, tell Congress to speak out against the Extinction Committee to save whales, sea turtles, and other critically imperiled Gulf species.

New Analyses: Cancer Warnings and Pesticides Two new analyses show that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has routinely failed to require cancer warnings on pesticide products — even when its own assessments found a high cancer risk for those products.   The Center for Biological Diversity looked at labels for all currently approved pesticides, finding that the EPA put cancer warnings on only 69 of 4,919 products the agency itself designated a “likely” human carcinogen.   Our timing is key: Later this month the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case hinging on whether the EPA has sole authority to implement pesticide-label warnings. Pesticide manufacturers are trying to get off the hook from future lawsuits brought by people who contracted glyphosate-linked cancers after using glyphosate-based products (like Roundup). The same pesticides the EPA fails to label for cancer risks are also driving species declines. Glyphosate kills milkweed, monarch butterflies’ only host plant.   Help us defend public health and pollinators from pesticides by giving to our Health for the Wild Fund. Victory: Court Supports Ice Seals’ Habitat Protection Fourteen years after we gained Endangered Species Act protection for bearded and ringed seals, the Center is still notching wins for them. Thanks to our legal intervention, a federal appeals court just upheld the designation of nearly 160 million acres off Alaska’s Arctic coast as their critical habitat.   Alaska had sued over the designation, arguing that it hindered oil and gas development, and in 2024 a lower court struck it down — but that decision didn’t last long. The new ruling reinstates full safeguards for these seals’ icy home, hit hard by climate change.   Bearded seals, known for their adorable mustaches and elaborate courtship songs, give birth and nurse pups on sea ice. Ringed seals, named for the gray rings covering their blubbery bodies, have pups in snow caves they build on top of sea ice — which can collapse as temperatures warm, with fatal consequences for the pups.

Court Axes Trump Rules Gutting Endangered Species Act Ruling on a lawsuit by the Center and allies, on Tuesday a federal court overturned four key provisions of regulations weakening the Endangered Species Act, issued under the first Trump administration.   The nixed provisions include one that would’ve allowed “smaller” habitat-destroying projects, like clearcutting spotted owl habitat, and one that would’ve forced the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to accept promises — even empty promises — of species-protecting mitigation measures when projects move forward.   “I’m thrilled the court tossed these efforts to gut endangered species protections and eviscerate a law Americans love,” said Center attorney Ryan Shannon.

Lawsuit Launched to Protect Horseshoe Crabs Horseshoe crabs are more than twice as old as the dinosaurs. Now they face extinction from modern threats — that is, people. Their populations have plummeted by more than 70% in recent decades because of habitat loss and killing for the biomedical and bait industries.   The Center petitioned to protect them under the Endangered Species Act, but earlier this year the Trump administration refused — so we just gave notice that we intend to sue.   Never seen a horseshoe crab? That’s Wild: Sperm Whales’ Pod Power In July 2023 scientists on a boat in the Caribbean — employing two aerial drones — watched in amazement as a pod of female sperm whales gathered near the ocean’s surface, apparently to help a whale named Rounder give birth. Underwater microphones recorded the whales’ communication as the calf emerged (tail first, like all whales are born) and helpers then lifted the newborn to breathe air for the first time.   Two new studies now describe that day’s events, giving the most comprehensive report of a sperm whale birth in history — and showing a remarkably coordinated and cooperative effort, even by whales not related to the new mother. The United Nations warned that Israel could be implementing the "Gaza model" in Lebanon as Israel's onslaught begins to resemble its genocidal campaign against Palestinians.¹

Israel launched a ground invasion in southern Lebanon with plans to demolish the homes of 600,000 people and remain there as an occupying force.^4,5 IDF attacks — including airstrikes on residential buildings in Beirut — have killed over a thousand civilians in Lebanon.⁶

"Given the horrific destruction that Israel’s extremist government has wrought on Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, the last thing in the world that American taxpayers need to do right now is to provide 22,000 new bombs" to Israel, said Sen. Sanders when he introduced the resolutions to block weapons shipments to Israel. "No more weapons to support an illegal war."⁷

The U.S. has already supported Israel’s violence and destruction in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran with tens of billions of dollars in funding and weapons. Congress must stop Trump from further fueling Israel’s aggression across the Middle East.

Right now, in America, a woman is facing murder charges for making a decision about her own body. This is what the end of reproductive freedom looks like.

Alexia Moore is a 31-year-old US Army veteran from Georgia. Last December, she went to a hospital in pain. When she told medical staff that she had taken a medication abortion pill, police arrested her and charged her with murder. We cannot stay silent while this happens.

Moore is one of the first women in Georgia charged with murder for terminating her own pregnancy, and it’s up to one man to decide whether her prosecution moves forward: District Attorney (DA) Keith Higgins.¹

Moore was arrested on March 4 after police determined she had taken misoprostol — a medication abortion drug approved by the FDA — to end her pregnancy.² Police charged her with murder under Georgia’s 2019 “heartbeat” law, which bans abortion after embryonic cardiac activity can be detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy, and before many women even know they are pregnant.³

Even the judge who presided over Moore’s bond hearing wasn’t buying it. He called the baseless murder charge “extremely problematic” and said he had serious doubts the state could ever secure a conviction.⁴ He set her bond at just $1 for the murder charge.⁵ Even so, Moore still faces the very real possibility of a murder prosecution — and DA Higgins has not ruled it out.

Here’s the thing: Higgins’ own office didn’t even approve these charges. Police filed them without consulting the DA’s office at all. And the coroner refused to deem the death of the fetus a homicide, citing that the cause and manner of death are undetermined.⁶ In other words, Higgins has the authority and the responsibility to stop this case now. No trial date has been set. The door is open. We need to make sure Higgins walks through it.

This case is a glimpse at the dystopian future that abortion criminalization was always designed to create. We knew that laws like Georgia’s 2019 heartbeat ban would ultimately be used to punish women and pregnant people.⁷ Our friends at Pregnancy Justice found that at least 210 women across the U.S. were charged with crimes related to their pregnancies in the 12 months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, more than in any comparable period on record.⁸ Alexia Moore’s case is not an accident or an aberration. It’s the point of these sexist laws.

No woman should face murder charges for making a decision about her own body and pregnancy. Will you sign the petition now?
