Donald Trump ran on a promise to lower costs for working families. That is, apparently, unless those lower costs hurt greedy corporations. Right now, the Trump administration is attempting to roll back fuel efficiency standards that were poised to save consumers $23 billion at the pump. This is a massive handout to Big Oil while also giving consumers fewer options when purchasing a new or used car -- putting more gas guzzlers on the road over fuel efficient vehicles. Before Trump’s Department of Transportation can officially roll back the United States’ fuel economy standards, they must hold a public comment period.
Since Congress enacted fuel efficiency standards in 1975, when cars got just 13 miles per gallon, the federal government has overseen the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) in order to make the U.S. less reliant on foreign oil. According to one industry source;[1]
In fact, over the last 20 years, CAFE standards have saved consumers an average of $7,000 in fuel costs over the lifetime of a car. But now, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is claiming that the federal government doesn’t have the authority to regulate fuel economy, even though it’s been the law of the land for the last 50 years. Together, we’re demanding policies that put the pocketbooks of working people over corporate greed. In Solidarity, -Faiz Faiz Shakir, Co-Founder
