Great news! A New York court has delivered a hard-won victory for ducks and geese with a ruling that allows New York City’s ban on foie gras sales to take effect after years of industry-backed challenges.
Foie gras, or “fatty liver,” is produced by force-feeding birds with a tube down their throat until their livers become diseased and unnaturally enlarged—and for its cruelty, it is widely opposed by consumers. In fact, a recent survey across 10 U.S. states found that 81% support banning foie gras sales.
In 2019, our President and Co-founder, Gene Baur, joined hundreds of animal activists to testify in support of New York City’s legislation. “Foie gras has no place in a society that values compassion,” he said. “New York City can be a leader in bringing about a more humane world.”
Thanks to you, Farm Sanctuary has been at the forefront of the movement to end the sale and cruel production of foie gras for decades, including sponsoring the landmark 2004 law that made California the first state in the nation to ban foie gras.
Today, we celebrate the court ruling that has ushered in the next step in the fight against foie gras, and we applaud all advocates who have protected ducks and geese from abuse.
At Farm Sanctuary, we have seen firsthand the impacts of foie gras production as we’ve rescued birds like Monet and Matisse. They arrived terrified of humans and covered in sores, scrapes, and cuts—but at sanctuary, they found gentle care, time and space to heal, and comfort in the friendship they were now free to enjoy. | | With your support, we will continue to advocate for an end to foie gras and a world in which all farm animals are treated with the kindness they deserve.
Thank you! Your compassion and generosity make progress like this possible.
