Whenever someone asks why Environmental Action exists, we sometimes mention the Dog Creek wolf pack -- which was erased by a hunter in a single afternoon. The pack was once a thriving, 12-member family in the heart of Wyoming's Grand Tetons. Like all families, all the pack wanted was to hunt together and play together. But by using a snowmobile as a weapon, a hunter pursued the pack through the deep powder and picked them off, one by one, until every last member was killed.1 It's called "wolf whacking," and it's perfectly legal under Wyoming's current laws.2 It's also just one reason why Environmental Action does what we do.
Wolf whacking isn't the only way that hunters kill wolves. In many areas of the Northern Rockies, wolves are classified as trophy game or even vermin, which opens the door to methods of killing that defy the standards of humane wildlife management.3 Hunters often shoot wolves from helicopters. This tactic, also called aerial gunning, leaves wolves with no cover and no chance of escape. Pups are also murdered in their dens. Den raiding eliminates a pack's next generation and threatens the long-term stability of the species. Steel traps are particularly inhumane. These devices snare a wolf's neck, starving its brain of blood and leaving a wolf in agony before a hunter arrives to finish the job.4 These practices aren't just inhumane. They are a direct threat to the long-term survival of gray wolves. And when entire packs such as the Dog Creek family are erased, it disrupts the ecological balance of our national parks and the surrounding wilderness.5 The Environmental Action team is committed to helping gray wolves survive and thrive. Federal agents killed two US citizens during the regime’s invasion of Minneapolis. One of them was Renee Good—killed by ICE officer Jonathan Ross. The regime’s response: seize the evidence, lock out state investigators, and open a probe into Renee Good’s wife—targeting the grieving widow instead of the killer. Seriously.
University of St. Thomas law professor Rachel Moran said: “They appear to be actively preventing the state from investigating.” That’s not just incompetence. That’s a cover up.
US District Judge Jeffrey Bryan isn’t having it. On April 9, he ordered the regime to hand over Ross’s personnel files, body camera footage, medical and psychological evaluations, and cell phone data. And they only have three weeks to do it.
Defense attorney Shauna Kieffer said: “This judge is effectively doing the investigation that the United States has turned its back on.”
