AKRON, Ohio — The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that burning off chemicals after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in Ohio in 2023 was unnecessary, with an agency official later accusing the company of failing to disclose information to investigators. Officials intentionally released and burned off toxic vinyl chloride from five derailed cars, sending smoke and chemicals into the air despite the potential health effects.
