Stopping gun violence

 

Ending the scourge of gun violence in our communities is, and has always been, Alvin Bragg’s top priority as Manhattan District Attorney.  To this end, he has increased gun prosecutions by more than 20%, and works every day with law enforcement to hold drivers of violence accountable and stop the flow of guns into New York City. But Alvin knows enforcement alone won’t deliver the enduring safety we need. It takes a comprehensive strategy that also includes community partnerships to prevent violence upstream, support for victims of crime, and help for those leaving incarceration so they can successfully reenter society and avoid returning to jail. Last week Alvin announced eight community-based organizations selected to receive $20,000 each from the Manhattan D.A.’s Office for initiatives to prevent youth gun violence. With this year’s awards, approximately 420 young New Yorkers will have received stipends and services through the D.A.’s Office’s summer gun violence prevention initiative.  These grants empower young people with a sense of their own positive potential, and they send a message that is both basic and profound: Investment in underserved communities is essential to public safety. Specifically designed for neighborhoods in Manhattan with high levels of gun crime, it serves young people ages 15-to-26 years old who have the highest risk of either committing a gun crime or falling victim to it. And the data shows this comprehensive approach is working: over the last two years, shooting incidents in Manhattan have declined by 33.8% and there are 34.5% fewer shooting victims.  These aren't just numbers: that's more than a third fewer people in Manhattan who's lives have not been personally shattered by senseless gun violence.  But there’s so much more to do, and we know Alvin can do it.
