North Shore Animal League America: The “Little Man” With a Big Heart
Little Man – one of our remarkable Sponsor Pets – first captured our heart seven years ago. Rescued in Tennessee as a puppy, he was super affectionate from the start and sought attention from everyone, but Little Man was born with significant physical challenges. A Dachshund/Poodle mix, this adorable pup suffers from irreversible deformities in both hind legs, causing them to be inverted, and is also blind in his left eye.
Little Man’s medical condition would have meant a death sentence at an overcrowded municipal shelter, but fortunately we reached him just in time. Others might see a dog with complicated medical issues like Little Man and give up on him. But not us and not animal lovers like you. That's why the minute he entered our doors, our Pet Health Centers team set him up with the care he needed for a better life — including a small mobility cart to assist his hind legs.
When you become part of our Pet Sponsorship Program, you join us in supporting animals like Little Man. Your monthly contributions help fund major operations and provide ongoing medical care to more than 30 special-needs Sponsor Pets throughout their lifetime. The Sponsorship Pet Program aids the dogs and cats who would have been overlooked due to the higher costs related to their ongoing medical treatment and increases the chance these deserving companion animals find a home. Learn more about this vital program.
Despite his physical shortcomings, Little Man’s larger-than-life spirit caught the attention of mom Peggy, and they’ve been together now for six years. Over that time, he’s made many friends in their neighborhood, both human and canine, and now nothing holds Little Man back as he plays outside. “People watching are amazed. They don’t see his ‘disability’ anymore, just like I don’t. I can’t tell you how many people stop and tell me how cute he is and how lucky he is,” Peggy said, “But I think I am the lucky one!”
