Investigators have warned that these groups operate in ways disturbingly similar to online abuse rings — closed communities where cruelty escalates as members encourage each other to commit ever more extreme acts. Yet despite the horrific nature of these crimes, the punishments handed down in some cases are shockingly weak. In one recent case in the United States, a woman involved in these monkey torture networks received just 40 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. For crimes involving the deliberate torture and killing of defenceless baby animals for entertainment, that sentence is outrageously lenient.
