The chips bag is empty, the refreshing drink has been consumed. Next step: discard the wrappings. It should be straightforward. Look for the triangular mark on the item denoting whether it can be recycled and place it into a bin: either trash or recycling. Done.

Not so fast.

Determining whether to allocate an item to the trash or the single-stream recycling bin used by many Massachusetts municipalities poses challenges even to the most avid recyclers.

What to do with toothbrushes? Razors? Carry-out food containers that are both clear and black plastic? Even the paper(-ish) pouch some manufacturers use to package tea; is it really paper? And can it be recycled?
